In a Southern Africa sports affair against Namibia, South Africa’s senior men’s team pulled a surprise performance with a 4-nil win giving millions of South African soccer fans hope. The Bafana Bafana squad started their campaign dismally a few weeks back losing their opening match against Mali with a 2-nil loss. Their talisman player Percy Tau had missed a penalty early in the previous game with an effort which way off the bar and way off target.
Before their second group game against Mali on Sunday the 21st of January 2024 few had hopes of a return performance which would put Bafana Bafana back on track in qualifying for the second round of the Continent’s elite competition. Especially after Namibia had given the world a surprise package against Tunisia one of Africa’s powerhouse footballing nations with a late winning goal in their opening encounter. Namibia came into the game much more confident and everyone Bafana Bafana to have a hard time finding a way around the Brave warriors. In poetic justice South Africa got a penalty around the 12th minute and without hesitation stepped up and redeemed his name by placing the ball cooly into the back of the net. This was to be only the first goal in a game that produced 4 goals with a brace from Zwane and a second half goal from substitute Maseko.
While Bafana Bafana have increased their chances of progressing to the next round, they still have to seal the deal with a point or win over Tunisia in their next encounter. The group is still wide open, and any team can still mathematically qualify for the next round.
