The Battle of Mbembesi, fondly known among the Matabele or Mthwakazi Nation as the Gadade Commemorations and dubbed IMBIZO 1893, stands as one of the most significant national events for the Mthwakazi Nation. This pivotal battle marked a heroic resistance by the Matabeleland Nation against colonial invading forces, with the brave forefathers’ bones lying in testament to their sacrifice.
Since 2011, Umhlahlo Wesizwe SikaMthwakazi has honored this historic event, commemorating the fallen warriors who left behind a powerful legacy of resistance, even in the face of certain death. It is widely recognized that the people of Matabeleland are among the most resilient, fiercely defending their freedom at all costs. Over the years, this national event has grown in prominence and is now considered one of the most important days for Matabeleland.
